At one stage I find myself gripping the suede-covered wheel so hard as the wheel squirms around that I nearly dislocate my right thumb. Sure, it’s great to be fully-involved in driving a car, but I don’t expect to be beaten up by the damn thing.

And whilst I’m on the subject of the steering wheel, let me just say that my reservations about using such a fabric on a wheel have finally come to fruition. I’d always wondered how this porous fabric that absolutely loves to soak up sweat from your palms as you’re driving would stand up in the long term. And judging by the sorry state of the wheel on this Superleggera, which has had, 4000 hard kilometres put on it by a variety of hands, it’s not very well. It just looks a bit – and there’s no delicate way to put this – skanky. Paying the extra $820 for the leather wheel is the way to go.

Still, wheel issues aside, the Superleggera is an absolute animal. It needs to be provoked heavily with an armful of lock and a heavy right foot to get the thing sliding – that four-wheel drive system gives it monumental levels of grip and the body remains all-but flat at all times.

However, as an ultimate baby Lambo I still believe the regular Gallardo LP560-4 combines the ballsy driving elements and the day-to-day liveability of the car much better. Factor in the price differential and it makes even more sense – the Superleggera commands a pricetag of $238k, compared to $201k for the LP560-4.
