It’s certainly not the first time La Sarthe has bitten back, and hard. Allan McNish went for a terrifying ride last year when his Audi R18 made contact with a GT backmarker, and came scarily close to wiping out a dozen photographers in the process. And it’s unlikely we will forget Peter Dumbreck vaulting the catch fencing in his Mercedes-Benz CLR prototype on the car’s only competitive outing in 1999.

The Le Mans test day has certainly given the World Endurance Championship following any number of subjects to ponder. But as Moreau’s accident – and varying other events from the 89-year history of the 24 Heures du Mans – have shown, things are never quite as straightforward as they seem.
