Being $254K short of the new McLaren 720S no longer means aspiring supercar owners can’t have the new Macca in their lives, thanks to a new addition to the LEGO Speed Champion range.
Now, brace yourself, it’s unlikely the 720S’ 710bhp, 770Nm (568lb ft) of torque and the 2.9-second 0-100kph time will be matched by its new LEGO alternative. On the plus side, at just $16, it’s a hell of a lot cheaper, and, this being a Woking project, neither McLaren nor LEGO have skimped on the detailing. Yes, the new Speed Champion doesn’t intricately replicate the undulations of the bodywork with perfect accuracy, but it still took a team in Denmark a full year to finalise the design.
Hued in the same McLaren Orange in which the real-world model made its debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, the new LEGO set also comes with a mini-figure – sorry, engineer – a design easel, and even a tiny single-stud brick in the shape of a 3D-printed model car. LEGO fans 7+ years and upwards can look forward to its arrival on June 1.
