I imagine a fair few of you have just leant a little closer to the computer screen. In an expansive motoring career, Jeff has works with BMW, Mercedes and – of course – Porsche as both a driver and a cinematographer. If that’s not enough, he’s a seven-time Pikes Peak hill climb champion and probably knocked more sand and dirt out of his race boots than either you or I have ever set foot on.

Naturally, we couldn’t let this moment slide by without saying a cheery hello, shaking the good man by the hand, and asking him a few questions.

Jeff, you’re so well known for your motoring photography and film work, but it’s very difficult to voice your name without ‘Pikes Peak’ springing to mind. Why don’t you walk us through how you got started in motorsport…  

“Well I started in road racing and dabbled with that for a while. I grew up around racing, what with my father being an enthusiast, and we went to races all the time. But honestly I went into photography because when I went to the races, it looked like the photographers were the closest to the racers, and that was my way of being around it. It ultimately led to being a high action specialist and filmmaker, and once I got into driving, I just liked driving a loose car. I liked sliding, I like controlling a car through your foot, not through the steering wheel, y’know those kinds of moments.

“So I was attracted to rallying, and so started running in the US Pro Rally Championship. In fact in my second year, I was National Champion. That led to a proposal of going to Porsche with the Carrera 4 at the time to run in the Pro Rally Championship. We did that for two seasons and ended up second in the Championship in the last year. But we also ran Pikes Peak.

Pikes Peak – because of Ari Vatanen and the great films and stories that came out of it with Michèle Mouton [who won the event in 1985 in an Audi S1 Sport Quattro, setting a then-record time in the process] – just got more press. I could run a full championship in the US and get less press than if I were to run Pikes Peak! So that became a program, and we’ve run that for 13 years with 9 different Porsches.”

Aside from publicity, what was it about running Pikes Peak that appealed to you personally? The challenge? The rich heritage…?

“It’s so cool to take on 20km, know it like the back of your hand and drive absolutely flat out through it. It’s so diverse. There’s 13 first gears hairpins, there’s 156 turns, in the GT2 RS I drove last year I reached 122mph [approx. 193kph]. It’s just an amazing experience to drive.

“It also fit nicely for Porsche before the Cayenne was here. It was another story to tell that wasn’t typical road racing. Pikes Peak and the mix of all-wheel drive Porsches racing there kind of led to doing the Cayenne and the Trans-Siberia and all these kinds of events.”

The nature of the event has led to it being labelled an off-road Nurburgring. Would you say that’s accurate?

“It’s really interesting to me because they’re round about the same length. I’ve driven the Nurburgring a lot because I’ve done productions there, and I feel there are three characteristics over a lap. And Pikes Peak has that too, from the tight and technical to the wide-open stages where you can let the car run, and the flowing sections in the mid-speeds. So they all play together.
