The supercar scene in Dubai is a fast-growing entity. Indeed, if I happen to wander into conversation with a fellow petrolhead (which, as a car spotter in Dubai, is hardly out of the question), it’s one of the more frequent topics discussed. There’s a wide selection to say the least, and considering I’ve been spotting nearly everyday now for the past four years, I’ve seen my fair share.
Spotting started as a hobby back in 2008 with just a small pocket sized Canon camera. Back then the hotspots included Mall of the Emirates and The Walk in Dubai’s Jumeirah Beach Residence, both of which have now fallen into the shadow of the Dubai Mall.
Times have changed quite dramatically. More and more select models roll by on a daily basis, and the number of car spotters in Dubai has consequently grown considerably.
Unsurprisingly then, I’ve had to up my game a little. Everyone has their own distinctive style, and my weapons of choice include a semi-professional Sony camcorder and a decent Canon EOS 7D along with a few lenses.
The hectic lifestyle of Dubai means most of the cars come out at night and therefore a tripod is essential for those killer static shots. Of course, security issues at most venues can be quite strict and the tripod is not always welcomed. That’s when you have to get creative, but that’s the nature of car spotting.
Back when I started in ‘the biz’, I was more than thrilled with every supercar that rolled past my lens. Nowadays though, the ‘ordinary’ supercar just doesn’t grip the same attention it used to. Since then, I’ve started focusing on the faster and more exclusive models out there.
All this means that my site shows examples of Ferraris, Lamborghinis, McLarens, Bugattis, Paganis and the occasional Koenigsegg: makes your heart melt doesn’t it?! Without a doubt my favourite spot of all time was when I encountered two Aston Martin One-77 Q-Series’ at the Dubai Mall. I always carry a camera and I’m looking out for cars, no matter if it’s day or night.
I must say that I feel very grateful to have this opportunity to experience and live such a life. Over the years I’ve met fantastic people, seen great cars and travelled around the world chasing cars. To me, car spotting is not just a hobby. It’s a way of life.
