Swiss artist Fabian Oefner shows what an exploding Jaguar E-Type might look like as part of his ‘Disintegration’ photography series.
Ever wondered what an exploding E-Type Jaguar would look like? No, us neither, and frankly the very thought just made us go weak at the knees. Fortunately said experiment will never have to be put to the test since Swiss Artist Fabian Oefner has recreated what an ‘explosion’ might look like with a scale model, a few sketches and hours upon hours of scrupulous photography.
The above artwork is entitled ‘Disintegration’, just one of several pieces in his collection focusing on 1950s and 1960s sports cars in moments of disarray. Fabian’s distinctive style comes from an early fascination with the clean, crisp look of 3D rendering, a style he’s replicated meticulously in his own work.
Disintegration starts with a deconstructed scale model of an E-Type, with each individual component – around a thousand of them or so – photographed separately before being positioned via a fine network of string and needles. Rather than scatter haphazard, each item is placed where it would likely end up should a real explosion take the front end off the Jag, based on calculations made before the project even gets underway. To keep Fabian on track, each photograph starts out as a detailed sketch.
For those of you who still can’t bear to see the iconic E-Type in such a state, you might be interested in some of Fabian’s other work. ‘Hatch’ for example shows a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO breaking out of its shell, much like an egg. Even a 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé wasn’t safe from disintegration…
