It was with a strong mix of childish excitement and cynicism that I grabbed my camera and jumped in the car for the slog up Sheikh Zayed Road from our Dubai base to the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. We had been invited to sample the pleasures of the new Lotus Exos/T125; yes, an F1 car for Joe Public, albeit a wealthy Joe, and one that seems to change names every time we hear about it. T125? Exos? 125? We’re not sure yet.
Now for the cynicism – another car from Lotus?! Their ever-growing stable of machines that have been promised to the public over the coming years is turning out to be quite large. I still can’t get my head around the delivery schedule pressure that the company is putting itself under, but I’ll hold judgement for the meanwhile and continue to soak in words from the marketing machine.

So, after a spritely slog down the road, I arrived at the still-mind-blowing Yas Marina Circuit. No matter how many times you see this view it still makes you stop, take a deep breath and soak it all in.

Back to the real attraction – the 125. This sleek piece of carbon fibre moulded into the shape of a contemporary F1 car, is aimed squarely at the wealthy private buyers (even post-recession there are a stack load of them) who have that burning desire to have something different in their life from a piece of older F1 history. The gee-gee power comes from a 640bhp Cosworth V8 racing engine offering what is described as near-GP2 levels of performance, thanks to a dry weight of just 560kg. Due to an ever-restrictive time frame prior to the event in the UAE, Lotus hadn’t had a chance to run the car and iron out any of the potential niggles that you would expect in a new project. So that meant pit time for the car and the opportunity to have a good look around it for me.

A quick look back in the T125 garage revealed the same scene – sadly. Lotus claims the car will not require an army of mechanics and engineers to run and maintain and is able to be operated by just one person, but it looks like they have a bit more work to do to get to that stage. The claim is repeated is also seen in the service intervals; it can run for 4500km before it needs a trip back to Hethel. Sounds promising…

Towards the end of the day the T125 did burst into life and proceeded to provide a couple of lucky punters the excitement that was promised. However, upsettingly for us one of the clients lost control of the car at the back of the main straight, hit the wall and that was the day done.
So it was with a mixture of frustration and sadness that we packed up our stuff and headed home. All being well another opportunity to drive the car will be made available to us soon and we can come back to you with a more promising and exciting story. And hopefully Lotus will have decided on the car’s actual name.
