Maserati Granturismo S. Tweaking The System

This version of the ‘box is the same found on the GranCabrio Sport. The engine itself has been untouched, which is mildly disappointing. This Automatica version sticks with the 434bhp version of the V8, while the Cambioscorsa has a 10bhp increase for 2012. This is to do with the North American market, where the Automatica sits below a more luxury-focused version of the MC Stradale in the product line-up.

So, all of this means that the changes behind the wheel are minimal. Not necessarily a bad thing; the GranTurismo S is still one of the most emotional appealing vehicles available today. Twist the key, engage sport mode and play with the throttle and you’ll be rewarded with one of the most sonorous, rousing exhaust notes this side of a Ferrari. The Italians have a knack of getting the blood pumping before the car’s even moved, and the operatic notes bellowed from the back of the GranTurismo don’t disappoint, from the burbling idle to the wailing and crackling at full chat.

On the move the GranTurismo is more restrained than its curvy lines would suggest. It’s fast, sure, and the revised gearbox settings mean that the experience is sharper than before. The paddles behind the wheel are metal facsimiles of the carbon fibre units found in the MC Stradale and in manual mode they make for very satisfying progress. Changes are quickfire without being as jerky and brutal as those on the Cambiocorsa, but it’s once again the sounds of the downshifts that really get the adrenaline flowing.

This test car has the MC Sport Line package, which features stiffer suspension than standard, which explains the more involved handling than I remember from previous models. The steering is still too light, and for something that sounds this good a bit more playfulness from the rear end would be nice, but for a large machine, the way it changes direction and stays flat and composed while still offering a supple ride is impressive.
