Mercedes-Benz has finally pulled the wraps off both its replacement to the SLS and its answer to the Porsche 911 and the Audi R8, the AMG GT.
The exterior is typical Affalterbach anger, courtesy of its long bonnet, flared wheel arches, sloping headlights and an aggressively sloping roofline reminiscent of the 911. The customary sporty Mercedes look continues on the inside too with concave door panelling, a low driving position, and carbon fibre trim with matt silver finishing. As well as the 8.4-inch central screen atop the dashboard, the centre console ‘Drive Unit’ also boasts a V8 layout, a nod to the power burbling underneath.
Well, that was what you were waiting for, right?
Power from the 4.0-litre biturbo V8 comes in two options. Whilst the entry level GT produces 456bhp and 442lb ft of torque to enable a 4sec sprint from 0-100kph and a 304kph top speed, the more potent GT S variant can reach 310kph top speed – via a 3.8 second 0-100kph time – thanks to 503bhp and 479lb ft of torque. Both power options work in conjunction with a paddle operated seven-speed dual clutch gearbox, which sends power to the 20-inch rear wheels (the fronts meanwhile measure 19-inches). In the GT a mechanical system will be used, whilst the quicker GT S will gain electronic control to shorten reaction times.
To further hone the AMG GT’s performance, the aluminium chassis setup is connected to double wishbone front suspension and a transaxle setup at the rear for improved road handling. As standard the GT comes with steel brakes (309mm), whilst ceramic 402mm composite discs are also available for the GT S model. Weighing in at as little as 1540kg in GT spec, the AMG GT boasts a 47:53 front-rear weight distribution.
Prices remain unconfirmed, but speculation suggests a ballpark figure of $165,000 for the GT and $180,000 for the GT S.
