Say goodbye to the SLK, for under the company’s new naming system, Mercedes’ baby roadster will henceforth be called the SLC Roadster. The new model joins the ‘C’ family – C as in Coupe, get it? – alongside the revised C-Class and GL SUV models.
Fortunately changes are more than name deep. Sitting below the SL on Mercedes’ line-up, the new SLC Roadster receives a new range of engine options. The base 1.5-litre four-cylinder kicks out either 156hp while top banana takes the form of a 362bhp twin turbo V6 in the top drawer SLC 43. Top speed for the latter sticks firmly to the electronically limited 250-kph, although 0-100kph is taken care of in 4.7 seconds, a tenth quicker than the outgoing SLK 55. Alongside AMG’s new nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, the SLC 43 also boasts AMG ride control suspension and adaptive dampers for greater road holding.
Primarily a facelift, aesthetic changes include sleeker head and taillights, a revised front grille, remodelled front and rear bumpers with larger air intakes, 18in alloy wheels, and new chrome trim twin tailpipes. The cabin meanwhile now features a new steering wheel, a larger 7in infotainment screen, and new ‘sun-reflecting’ leather-trimmed seats.
