So here we go – The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. A mind blowing car that was such a revelation I just couldn’t stop driving the thing. Now that isn’t an exaggeration – I really did spend every waking hour taking every job – personal or work – that necessitated a drive. My wife loved it, the petrol pump attendants asked if I had a problem as I was in the same spot three times in one day and the wallet took a monumental bruising.
We collected the car after feverishly running around like children following a phone call from Mercedes Benz Middle East offering us the chance to be the first media in town to get our mitts on it. Now, who would we be to say no to that offer. One thing about the SLS that surprised me at first was this weapon is priced to sell; it’s very much a serious toy for the cash. Stump up your 750,000 AED and for wad of Ds you will thundering away in the first road-going Mercedes ever to be entirely structured and panelled in aluminium. Not only that, you get those doors! The ultimate party piece – mind you it’s one you either love or hate.

Remember the SLR? Well there is input whatsoever from McLaren in the SLS. Initially a worrying point, but the AMG boys well and truly stepped up to the plate with their first attempt and a complete car. The raw numbers the guys have squeezed out of that ballistic engine make for very impressive reading: 571bhp at 6800rpm from a normally aspirated 6208cc V8 and the sprint up through the silky 7-speeder takes a mind blowing 3.8 seconds and onto a top speed electronically limited to 315kph! God knows why the limiter is sat there though…can you imagine the frustration while trying to break the magical 320?

One aspect of the car that was actually quite surprising was that even with the extensive use of aluminium and dribbles of lightweight carbon throughout the car, she isn’t the featherweight you would expect. Mind you, at 1620kg you would think it would be a bit of a bruiser. Far from the truth though. We found the SLS to be a bit of a deft wheeler around the twisties. Yes it’s a big GT car but it really comes to you when you start to press on. The limited-slip differential is a mechanical multi?clutch type, and the springy bits in the corners are passive.

The SLS is very much a pure car, free of electronic trickery and things to detract you from the pure pleasure of driving. An aspect that more manufacturers should be concentrating on.

With the doors shut (or open in the case of the pic) the interior is super stunning, very retro and upright in its appearance and beautifully screwed together. Sliding into the seat you really get the feel that this car is blatantly cabin rear in its layout. An initially weird world to be in but once you get used to the length of the bonnet and the feeling the car is rotating around your hips, you really start to get the feel for it.

Now lets take a look at the doors? Surprising yes, show stopping yes and oddly enough completely legal. We find it very weird that a car can be on sale today with doors that open exclusively upwards, however the crack team at AMG have been hard at work to make it happen. With a cheeky pyrotechnic system the doors are able to release themselves from the hinges enabling you to be pulled free in the event of a roll over. If you manage to tip it over we will be shocked though…

So all in all this car was and is a complete revelation. Stunning to look at, drive and more than capable of destroying large chunks of tarmac if the thought of continent bashing ever popped into your head.

As the sun came down on the day we sat and stared at the car that has brought AMG forward another step in their illustrious history. We are more than looking forward to seeing the big Gullwings battling around the Dubai Autodrome in the up and coming 24hr race. We are sure it’ll be a success and will sound incredible while doing it.
