Pulling the gullwing doors open and upwards, Bernd clambers in to the driver’s seat of the SLS with the agility of a man who has done this a million times. Poking my head inside I’m expecting the usual messy, stripped-out racecar interior, but as this is a Mercedes the finish is outstanding.

The bare metal surfaces are complemented by lashings of carbonfibre and Alcantara and there are even styling cues retained from the road car such as the air-vents, centre console and oval shaped steering wheel, which is of course adorned with a three-pointed star.

Unusually the driver’s seat is moulded inside a carbonfibre safety cell, which gives the SLS levels of protection that are usually only available in single seaters or prototypes with carbon monocoques. This is an ingenius innovation that I wouldn’t be surprised to see other manufacturers adopt. Also unlike most racing cars, the SLS GT3‘s driving position will adapt to a wide range of sizes, which makes it perfect for endurance racing. This is also a big relief for me as I always struggle to get my large (some would say ‘fat’) frame comfortable in the tight confines of most racing cars. Not only does the car feature a hugely adjustable tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel but also the pedal box slides fore and aft as the driver’s seat is fixed.

This is another clever trick in the SLS that shows how much thought has gone into making it the best racing car possible. Up ahead, instead of the usual dash there is a simple digital instrumentation display and buttons on the steering wheel that let you scroll through the various information screens provided by the onboard telemetry system. Other buttons on the wheel are for the radio, selection of neutral, pit-lane speed limiter and most importantly the high-beam button for flashing the car’s headlights at slow-pokes ahead that are clogging up the track.

Schneider’s attention then turns to the centre console, which houses numerous switches, buttons and dials, the most intriguing of which control the traction control and ABS. Each has a rotary dial with settings from 1 to 11. When quizzed about this Schneider reveals that settings 1 to 5 are for the wet, 6 to 10 are used in the dry, while 11 is referred to as ‘the Nordschleife setting’. In other words, it’s tuned for tracks that are super bumpy, like the infamous Nurburgring. TC and ABS can of course be completely disabled, although I have no plans to do so during my short run. There is also a dial that controls the three different engine maps available with a separate map for wet conditions, one for fuel efficiency and the third is referred to by Bernd as ‘maximum attack’. There is even a fan in the car to aid with air circulation (AC is an option too), which is startling in its strength. It sounds like an industrial vacuum cleaner.

Guided tour over, we head into the Mercedes hospitality suite for a chat while Maylander gives the final few AMG customers their taxi rides. All emerge dazed, confused and exhilarated in equal measure. While we wait I chat to Bernd about his more recent racing exploits, the most obvious of which is January’s 24 Hours of Dubai, where SLSs locked out the podium. Schneider incredibly drove for both the teams that finished second and third,which makes me feel exhausted just thinking about it.

Interestingly Bernd refers to the annual race around the clock at the Dubai Autodrome as “a bit strange” due to the unusual practice of penalising cars that are quicker than a target lap time with weight and a smaller fuel tank. The reasoning behind this is that it gives the gentlemen drivers a chance to compete with the pros but in essence it just discourages everyone from pushing to the limit. To be honest I whole-heartedly agree with his stance and would like to see the rules changed for next year. Inevitably the conversation switches to the fearsome Nurburgring 24-hour race which Bernd describes as “over 200 cars going to war on the track”. I can sense from the tone of his voice the amount of respect he has for the race.

With the main activities out on track officially over, it’s time for the SLS to be handed over from one Bernd to the other. As Maylander wraps up, Schneider changes into an AMG-branded race suit and jumps in the car for a few exploratory laps of the Yas track. Apparently it’s the first time he’s been here and he wants to learn the track before he takes me out for a taxi ride. He must be a fast learner as four laps later he’s back in the pits and before I know it I’m being belted into the passenger seat of the SLS. It’s not every day you get to observe a master at work so up close and personal, and I intend to soak as much of the experience in as possible.
