The Audi RS4. The Lotus Exige S. The Porsche Cayman S. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VI and VII. And the Jaguar XKR. All of them have just been beaten around the Nordschleife by a Mini Cooper.
Some context before we start waxing too lyrical. Each of these sporting beasts has just had their fastest laps around Germany’s infamous Nordschelife circuit beaten by this handsome devil, the Mini John Cooper Works GP. Let’s add a bit more perspective to that: over 20+km of tyre melting tarmac, the GP’s time of 8m 23s was only 1s slower than a BMW M3.
Some impressive kit then. Saying that, though Mini’s press release used terms like ‘aerodynamic balance’, ‘exclusive powertrain’, and ‘twin-scroll turbo engine’, they’ve yet to any drop official performance figures. Teases. Still, given that the last John Cooper Works GP kit in 2006 produced 214hp from a supercharged 1.6l, we’ve got our ball park figure at least.
Before you get too excited, only 2000 units will be built, and chances are those will be scooped up quickly. Then again, Hollywood is always looking to make more remakes: “Hang on a minute lads, I’ve got a great idea…”
The Italian Job GP. You heard it here first.
