Did we mention the flexible interior? The big captain’s chairs all slide forward on rails and can even be turned around or removed for that ideal mobile office set up. You can order various different bits of furniture to fit into the Multivan, from tables to refrigerators, and all can slide about on the rails. Clever.
There are also drawers under all the seats, in which one can store cables and miscellaneous stuff.
Crucially, the big seats allow for the safe transportation of souvenirs.
We haven’t really talked about how well it drives, as the Multivan served mainly as a stationary base. But it’s actually pretty good, rather car-like. So it shifts really rather well, especially once the revs get going. It’s easy to forget you’re in a van rather than a regular car. To say it’s enjoyable to drive would be pushing it somewhat – I wouldn’t want to throw it into a corner for fear of tipping over, and the steering is far too light, but it’s definitely capable of surprising with its straightline speed. When no one’s in it, at least.
Overall then, the Multivan served us very well. If it were to really become a crankandpiston workhorse, we’d want a slightly larger boot space so that we could position a photographer in it to take tracking shots of other cars. But other than that, it did exactly as we wanted. Thanks Volkswagen.
