Mercedes’ C-Class coupe line-up for 2016 nears completion as the company unveils the new AMG C 43 Coupe. The newboy joins the full-fat C 63 Coupe as part of AMG’s two-wave assault on both BMW’s M division and the Audi RS range.
Power – all 367bhp of it – comes from a 3-litre twin-turbo V6, though unlike the C 63, power and 520Nm (384lb ft) of torque are distributed to all four wheels courtesy of Mercedes’ established 4MATIC configuration, though torque is still heavily rear-biased (31:67 per cent, front to rear). Equipped with a 9G nine-speed automatic transmission (compared with the C 63’s 7G seven-speed example), the C 43 Coupe rips from 0-100kph in 4.7 seconds and onto an electronically limited top speed of 250kph.
Though similar in style to the C 63 Coupe (which, by the by, we drove for the first time last year in Spain), the new C 43 incorporates revised bumpers, chrome plated twin-tailpipes and 18in AMG-light alloys, while the cabin features a flat-bottomed steering wheel and sports seats. Under the surface lies AMG Ride Control sport suspension, front axle revisions inspired by the C 63, and a revised brake package, the discs for which have been beefed up to 360mm (front) a and 320mm (rear). Three-stage adaptive variable dampers have been pulled straight from the C 63, though an overall weight has not yet been revealed.
Both the C 43 Coupe and the SLC 43 Roadster, which made its debut in Detroit earlier this year, represent the revived ‘43’ nomenclature for Mercedes-AMG, first introduced back in 1997. Significantly, the launch of the C 43 marks ‘the introduction of a whole series of new ‘43’ models’ that will make their debut this year.
Like most new unveils over the past couple of weeks, the new C 43 will make its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show. And to welcome this ‘New Chapter, there’s even a video of Mercedes’ increasing C-Class Coupe line-up…
