A year after the release of the latest-generation MINI, the company is back at the Detroit Motor Show to reveal its steroid-enhanced sibling – the new MINI John Cooper Works. As we’ve already come to expect from previous JCW lines, the new model ups the fun factor by adding more power, tuned suspension and a body design that’s been aerodynamically optimised.

The engine is a four-cylinder, turbocharged unit with 228bhp and 236lb ft, which means it’ll hit 100kph in 6.3 seconds when equipped with the six-speed manual gearbox, or 0.2 seconds faster with the six-speed auto, while other upgrades include sports suspension, four-pot Brembo brakes and some lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels.

MINI will also be using Detroit to show off some other new goodies, most notably a ‘design study’ (that’s a concept car to you and me) called the MINI Superleggera Vision. A collaboration between MINI and Italian firm Touring Superleggera, it’s an open-top two seater, build by hand and with an electric motor under the bonnet. But… is it just us, or is there a miniature Ford Thunderbird vibe to it?
