My first half-lap is soon in the bag and the results are surprising. Out of the heavy-braking corners, our Carrera S is…not slow (that would be ridiculous!) but even with gravity working my right foot hard, the lead car in our convoy simply drives away for us: he’s through the Corkscrew – modeled on Laguna Seca’s infamous corner – before I’ve even hit the first apex. Gunning down the back straight, however, the mist clears. In my eagerness to get on-track, I’ve inadvertently knocked the automatic Doppelkupplungsgetriebe transmission into manual, and have consequently just done the whole of the first leg in fourth.

Now that the oaf behind the wheel is concentrating, the experience is incredible. Lifting off (hint of brake) through turn two sets us up nicely for the high-speed, sweeping turn three. Rear wheels twitching excitedly, but never waywardly, we hammer down the gears into second, left-hand down and dive into the Corkscrew. Hard right, swooping left, hit the apex and feed the power in to gun it down the back straight. I’d like to tell you just how extraordinary the engine notes sound ricocheting off the cabin walls but I’m too busy giggling.

Porsche’s optional Dynamic Chassis Control – the awesome looking front splitter – works tirelessly under the surface, funneling ever more grip to the front tyres. Feeling more comfortable, I activate Sport Plus. Gear changes are instantaneous, and my helmet bumps off the headrest under ferocious acceleration. The back end is feistier than ever, the car now able to go deeper into each corner: the ease with which this 991 handles punishment is astonishing.
