Volvo brings a bit of beauty to the Frankfurt Motor Show, the new Coupe Concept.
[Not a valid template]It’s not very often we look at a Volvo and think ‘well that’s a bit of a looker’. But such is the case with the new Coupe Concept, which – as it turns out – offers much more than a re-imagining of the company’s legendary P1800.
First among which is the plug-in hybrid powerplant, part of the company’s Drive-E electric system. Said configuration incorporates a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder Drive-E unit with supercharger and an electric motor connected to the rear axle. These produce a combined total of 395bhp and 442lb ft of torque, though official performance figures have yet to be announced. The new powertrain is also available with the new S60, V60 and XC60 launched this Autumn.
Of course the other big talking point is the Scalable Product Architecture, which as it turns out involves a minefield of confusing terminology. As well as curved bodylines and ‘confident stance’ on 21-inch wheels, the greenhouse – which we assume is the cabin – has been moved backwards for a sportier look on the Coupe. The floating grille, new T-shaped DLR headlamps and bonnet grooves offer a significantly more aggressive look at the front, while a low bonnet and roofline completes the look, namely that of a crouching lion apparently.
Enjoying its time in the spotlight at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Coupe Concept is the first of three design studies set to be launched showcasing a future design language for the Swedish company ahead of the all-new XC90 next year.
Turns out alongside Ikea-spec interiors and five-star safety ratings, Volvo might be springing some more lookers on an unsuspecting public in the not too distant future.
