Anything with a ‘Quattro’ in its name usually grabs our attention. Including this, the new e-tron Quattro concept which made its debut at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
Set to become the Q6 e-tron electric SUV as early as 2018, the concept has some bold figures to back up alongside its striking looks, including a 500km full-electric range. Power to produce the latter comes courtesy of three electric motors – one of which drives the front axle, the others the rear – and a large lithium-ion battery pack. A plodder the Audi newboy should not be though, with 0-100kph completed in 4.6 seconds en-route to a top speed of 250kph.
The overall design is a step away from the current Q5 and Q7, the sleeker profile and more chiselled front end (and yes, cameras instead of wing mirrors) closer in style to the BMW X6 and the brand new Mercedes-Benz GLE. Audi has also confirmed that, ahead of a full production run for the technology, the Quattro concept marks the debut for the company’s Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED). Inside potential customers will also find the new Audi virtual cockpit that made its debut last year.
As well as space and looks, Audi has also considered manoeuvrability, the e-tron Quattro boasting adaptive air suspension, a tautened chassis, and all-wheel steering. Though it stands 1.54m high, an extended wheelbase (nose to tail, the e-tron is 4.88m long and 1.93m wide) has also been incorporated to ensure the concept ‘performs like a sports car’.
