One of the worst kept secrets in the motoring industry has finally been come to an end as Jaguar finally released technical details and performance figures for the brand new F-TYPE SVR, the fastest road-going Jaguar ever.
Previously Jaguar had only confirmed that the SVR was ‘capable of 200mph (322kph)’ and rumours abounded, when images were accidentally leaked onto the internet ahead of time, that power could reach as high as 567bhp. Now the company has confirmed that the first Jaguar to ever receive the Special Vehicle Operations spit and polish will be powered by the same 5-litre supercharged V8 found across its F-TYPE, XF and XJ range as well as the Range Rover Sport and SVR iteration. Said unit will fire out 567bhp and 700Nm (516lb ft) of torque, equal on power but 20Nm (15lb ft) up on Project 7, the previous fastest road-going Jag.
Combining an eight-speed automatic gearbox and an all-wheel drive system with the supercharged V8 means the SVR Coupe will hit 100kph off the line in 3.7 seconds, about the same speed as your average greyhound and a tenth faster than Project 7. The Convertible model meanwhile will equal the Coupe’s 0-100kph time, though ‘lags’ 8kph down on the top speed, 314kph to 322kph.
Though aesthetically similar to the R, the new SVR boasts new air inlets in the front bumper, a revised splitter and a carbon fibre active rear wing. Chassis tweaks include new dampers and stiffer suspension, while that new rear spoiler can reduce lift by up to 80 per cent: you’ll need it slammed to the bodywork if you want to touch that 322kph figure, mind. The package rides atop new, 20in lightweight wheels now boasting wider tyres, while carbon ceramic brakes both improve the stopping power and lighten the load by 21kg. The traditional weight saving regime of any new performance model means the F-TYPE SVR coupe weighs in at an impressive 1705kg, the convertible just a nod behind on 1720kg.
Inside there’s little significant difference over the F-TYPE’s already stellar design – it won considerable kudos against the Nissan GT-R and Aston Martin DB9 in our group test last year – though there is an updated steering wheel with aluminium shift paddles (we can already hear Mr Tromans crying “hurrah!”), and contrast stitching across the dashboard. The seats are also of unique SVR-spec.
As previously stated, the F-TYPE SVR will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Interested customers also making the jaunt to Switzerland with their wallets may want to bear in mind that prices for the coupe start from $157,200, while the convertible will be at least $165,000.
