[Not a valid template]The Lamborghini Veneno Roadster is one of the most extreme super sports cars of all time. If it was any other manufacturer saying that, we would take it with a pinch of salt. Lamborghini however, has excelled at producing radical designs since the Lamborghini Miura debuted – in P400 prototype form – at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show. It was the next gem from designer Marcello Gandini – the Countach – that really established the marque as the premiere proponents of extreme Italian design.
Extreme has now taken on a new meaning even within the produce of Automobil Lamborghini. crankandpiston.com were kindly invited to spend some time with the Lamborghini Veneno Roadster before its world priemer today on board an Italian Navy aircraft carrier – the Cavour – and it would just be us alone with one of the world’s most exclusive super sports cars. The statistics speak for themselves when describing the Veneno. It has a not-too-shabby 750hp from its 6.5-litre V12, accelerates from 0-100kph in 2.9 seconds and tops out at 355kph. But nothing (yes, not even those photoshopped images that have been doing the rounds on the internet webasphere) can prepare you for that moment when you come face to face with this maddest, craziest raging bull. And yet, being in close proximity with this steroid abusing bovine has completely changed my initial opinion of it.
When I first viewed those photoshopped images of the Veneno – and then subsequently the photoshopped Veneno Roadster – I was under the misapprehension that it was being extreme for extreme sake. Peal off that dark red paint work, apply some advertising and what you are really looking at is a racing prototype. That is 100-percent road legal.
The world needs manufacturers like Lamborghini. While everyone else is playing it safe, the boys from Sant’Agata Bolognese aren’t afraid to push the boat out. Or at least let us shoot their latest creation on the deck of one.
