Alfa Romeo has revealed its rival to the BMW 3-Series, with the launch of the Giulia GT.
[Not a valid template]With design features such as very short overhangs, a long bonnet and muscular haunches, it aims to take on its German competitors. The model sees an all-new rear-wheel drive system – with all-wheel drive on its way.
Under the bonnet, there are a range of engines available – all tuned by engineers with a Ferrari background, and mounted between the axles for 50/50 weight distribution. And all sitting on “Alfalink” multilink suspension to the rear and a double-wishbone set up for the front – with electronically-controlled adaptive damper.
At the top of the range, the Giulia Quadrifoglio model sees a 510hp V6 turbo petrol powerplant, boasting a 0-100kph of 3.9 seconds. The Italian manufacturer’s use of lightweight materials such as carbon fibre and aluminium means its weight-to-power ratio is respectable – lower than 3kg or 6.6lbs per hp). Its double-clutch system allows the rear differential to control the torque delivery to each wheel. There’s even a front active aero splitter to manage downforce, for higher stability and better cornering grip. BMW beware.
The unveil was to celebrate the 105th anniversary of the founding of A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili). And if the below video is anything to go by, we’re assuming ‘la meccanica delle emozioni’ loosely translates as ‘holy hell that’s an awesome engine sound’.
