*NOW UPDATED WITH VIDEO* 1380bhp Nissan GT-R Nismo sets Guinness World Record with near-305kph drift with Japanese pro-drifter, Masato Kawabata
[Not a valid template]It’s official, the Nissan GT-R now holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest ever drift, having hit a barely comprehensible 304.96kph during an attempt at the Fujairah International Airport in the United Arab Emirates.
Abiding by the strict regulations set down by Guinness, tuning specialists GReddy Trust who prepared the MY16 GT-R ahead of time were given just three runs on the Fujairah airport’s 3km airstrip. No mean feat, given that the GT-R itself had been specially tailored to deliver 1380hp to the rear wheels, more than double the 562bhp output of the 2017 GT-R that made its debut in Geneva last month. Extensive testing ahead of the world record run took place at the Fuji Speedway, Nissan targeting ‘at least’ a 300kph drift as well as Polish driver Jakub Przygoński’s two-year standing record of 217.9kph. In the hot seat was Masato Kawabata, former D1GP Series champion and current Team Tokyo runner.
Hardly the first time an automotive Guinness World Record has been broken in the Middle East: long time readers may remember Abdo Feghali’s record-breaking continuous drift back in 2012, while just one year, a Nissan Patrol towed a 170.9 ton cargo plane 50m on the runway of Sharjah Airport. Nissan was also racking up the silverware last year too, when Drift Allstar James Deane and 2014 Red Bull King of Drift Ahmad Daham set a world record for the longest successive tandem drift.
