The second-generation Jaguar XF got its world debut at the New York Motor Show. With a look that’s not dissimilar to the outgoing model, which has been with us since 2007, the new car is nevertheless substantially overhauled. It’s lighter than the current XF, more efficient and jammed with new tech.

Underneath the new XF is the same aluminium base shared with the smaller XE. Jaguar says this means the XF is up to 80kg lighter than its rivals, which include the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the Audi A6. Although the new XF is shorter and lower, it has a 51mm longer wheelbase and increased torsional stiffness, and the front overhang has been reduced by 66mm for a sharper look.

Powertrains so far announced for the new Jaguar XF include 2-litre and 3-litre diesel units, a 2-litre petrol engine with 237bhp and a 3-litre supercharged V6 model available with either 335bhp or 375bhp. The petrol models all come with an eight-speed auto box.

The V6 models can be ordered with an all-wheel drive system with a host of technologies attached, including Intelligent Driveline Dynamics, which balances performance and all-weather capability, and an Adaptive Surface Response mode which distinguishes between different types of surface for improved traction. All-Surface Progress Control on rear-wheel drive models helps traction on low-friction surfaces such as snow and ice.

The new Jaguar XF rides on double wishbone suspension and an integral link set up at the back. This isolates vertical movement from lateral and longitudinal, which means softer bushes can be used for comfort without compromising handling. Adaptive dampers help soak up road bumps, and the weight distribution is described as “near-50:50”.

Other techy goodness includes full-LED headlights, a laser head-up display in full colour, autonomous emergency braking, an intelligent speed limiter and semi-automated parking.

Inside there’s a new 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, and a 17-speaker Meridian stereo. The instrument cluster is a 12.3-inch TFT display that can be customised by the driver. The interior space is increased over the outgoing Jaguar XF,with more head and legroom in the rear.

The new Jaguar XF should start arriving on roads towards the end of the year.
