[Not a valid template]It won’t be too long before you see this newboy plastered everywhere across one social media platform or another, for this is the new-for-2017 Nissan GT-R, and as well as packing a new look, it also boasts more power.
Granted the ‘new look’ is a subtle one for Nissan’s R35 gen GT-R, now celebrating its ninth year on the market. The basic character remains intact, though there’s a new front splitter and a ‘V Motion’ grille in-keeping with the Japanese marque’s current design language. Said grille is more gaping than its predecessor to help improve engine cooling, underneath which lies a newly restyled bumper (just try not to think ‘Maxima’) and on top of which is a ‘significantly reinforced’ bonnet to aid stability, and ultimately, cornering capability.
At the back, the quad exhaust tips and four ring rear lights remain intact, though they have now been joined by side air vents and wider side sills, all in the name of optimising air flow over the bodywork. The mechanics underpinnings now include new suspension, a stiffer bodyshell and new-design 20in alloys clad with super sticky rubber. Oh, and let’s not forget the engine, which has also received a pep-up.
New ignition timing and more boost from the turbochargers mean the 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V6 now produces 562bhp and 470lb ft of torque, 542bhp and 466lb ft up on the outgoing model, although performance figures have yet to be confirmed. The V6 is once again mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, which now features more refined shifts and a new set of paddle shifters on a newly designed steering wheel. And that’s just the start of an overhaul the cabin has received.
A more elegant / less plastic-y cabin design than the GT-R has boasted hitherto, the new look includes a sizable git-load of leather upholstery, a new ‘horizontal flow’ dashboard featuring only 11 switches (down from 27) and an updated 8in touchscreen infotainment system. There’s also a new assortment of colour options, both inside and out, ‘Katsura Orange’ (pictured above) probably the most eye-catching.
Expect full pricing and specifications to land when the 2017 GT-R hits the showroom this Autumn.
