Two short clips tease the arrival of the new, McLaren 675LT-rivalling Mercedes-AMG GT R, which is expected to make its global debut at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
[Not a valid template]The Mercedes-AMG GT R is coming, and it’s pretty much guaranteed the beast will make its global debut at this month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The new teaser clip lasts just a little over 20 seconds and is a symphony of fast-paced jump cuts, so you might want to be quick with the pause button if you want a good look. What we can tell you though is that AMG GT R will likely boast a sportier cabin design (Alcantara flat-bottomed steering wheel, anyone?), a revised front splitter and air intakes, and a much larger rear spoiler. We’re pretty confident they’ll also be some lightweight alloy wheels, performance rubber, and extra wide rear-wheels up for grabs too. Oh, and some lurid green paintwork, which just seems to work so well in that dimly lit studio, don’t you think?
Technical and performance details have yet to be published, astonishingly, Mercedes-AMG confirming only that the ‘R’ represents ‘the next level of performance’. More than likely though the GT R will use the same 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 as its base model, with power likely to creep up from 503bhp in the AMG GT S (our local test drive of which you can read HERE) to around 570bhp, potentially slotting the hardcore brute against the 666bhp McLaren 675LT among others. Anything more than that is unlikely though, Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers suggesting that the new AMG GT R will boast ‘less than 600bhp’, and thus out of reach of the 740bhp Lamborghini Aventador Superveloce.
Interestingly, this is actually one of two teaser clips Mercedes has dropped for the AMG GT R. The other, entitled ‘Night Guard’, follows a security team at the Nürburgring checking out a commotion on-track, speculated to be The Beast of the Green Hell. Given that the GT R is largely based on the track-focused GT3, the most recent winner of the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, it’s not that surprising a backdrop. Quite honestly though (sorry Mercedes), the American Werewolf in London style setup is a bit nauseating, even if the 30 second clip does at least tease the GT R’s V8 soundtrack.
