Two-time World Rally Champion Walter Röhrl puts the new Porsche Cayenne GTS through its paces on-track.
[Not a valid template]When a company lets loose two-time World Rally Champion Walter Röhrl at the wheel of its newest Gran Turismo Sport model you know they’re feeling pretty confident. The great man has, after all, conquered the stages in Lancia 037s, Fiat 131 Abarths and Audi Quattro S1s. So a ‘piddling’ Porsche Cayenne GTS should be no problem.
Ah, but with the new Cayenne GTS comes a difference, and we’re not just talking about the ‘striking’ lettering now adorning the doors and front headrests. The 420hp 4.8-litre V8 previously found under the bonnet – as we discovered when we test drove the previous model – has now been downsized to a 3.6-litre bi-turbo V6 as found in the lower-spec Cayenne S. Fear not though speed freaks, since power has been upped by 20hp to 440hp, and the resultant 0-100kph sprint has now dropped to 5.2 seconds (shave 0.1s further if you opt for the Sport Chrono package).
Exterior mods can be counted on one hand, with the Cayenne Turbo-esque nose with larger air intakes and 20-inch RS Spyder design wheels the main attraction. Key changes however strike beneath the bodywork, the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) now adopting a sportier setup through the steel-spring suspension, the GTS now sitting 24mm lower to the ground as a result. Turbo red brake calipers also make an appearance, the discs slightly larger for added stopping power.
But sorry to interrupt Walter. Over to you…
