Volkswagen Driving Experience. Sweden. Part 2

The challenge picks up pace on Day 2 of the Volkswagen Driving Experience on a frozen lake in Sweden. Time to get the Mk7 Golf on track.

Getting out off bed at an early hour on day two of the Volkswagen Driving Experience proves remarkably easy. A hot breakfast is quickly scoffed down then we head out on the road and make our way to Arvidsjaursjön.

The first exercise of the day involves a massive circle with snow banks on both the inside and outside. Keeping things neat and tidy, while staying tight to the inside snow bank, is obviously the shortest distance around this track but it is not the fastest. Likewise, giving it loads of right foot and drifting like a pro, although obviously the most sideways fun, is also not the fastest. The balance between the two is an extremely tricky task to master.

The fastest way is to initiate the drift while tucked in tight and with the car facing the inner snowbank. Then, with the wheels straightened, ‘steer’ by using the accelerator. The happy medium between lateral force and forward acceleration allows the car to circle the course. In principle this is super easy but in practice this is a very (very very) difficult thing to perfect. A little too much accelerator will pile the Golf straight in to the snow bank in front, which I can only see out of my peripheral vision as I am a little busy looking out the side window (the direction of travel). Not enough accelerator and the lateral force will take over and push the car wide while reducing speed.

Added to this finely balanced mix is the difficulty of perfecting the angle of attack. If the drift is too shallow then centrifugal force takes over and the car rapidly starts to move to the outside snow bank. If the drift is too steep, then a spin is on the cards which will no doubt end badly with the Golf buried in the inside snow bank. For most of us, the first few laps are hilarious as we bounce from the inside to the outside and zig-zag our way around a circle.
