Below is the first of three short films commissioned by McLaren during its 50th anniversary year. A tribute to company founder Bruce McLaren – who tragically lost his life at Goodwood, UK, in 1970 – this video walks us through how the New Zealander rose through the motorsport ranks.

Goodwood, 1970. Bruce McLaren has been a regular on the Grand Prix and Can-Am circuits since the late-1950s, and written himself firmly in motorsport’s history book by taking seven Formula One victories, (three non-Championship) two Can-Am titles (five in succession as a manufacturer) and won the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans with Chris Amon in 1966. He has won the jewel in F1’s crown, the Monaco Grand Prix, and become the first driver ever to win a Grand Prix in a car that bears his name, in the McLaren M7A at Spa-Francorchamps, 1968.
At Goodwood Circuit, eight years after the near-fatal accident of Stirling Moss at the same venue and just two after the death of the great Jim Clark at Hockenheim, McLaren’s M8D Can-Am machine spears into the barriers on the Lavant Straight after rear bodywork came loose at speed.
