Cool as FXX K. Ferrari’s new track weapon unveiled

The wait for Ferrari’s XX version of the LaFerrari is over – say hello to the FXX K.

Ever since the LaFerrari was unveiled, we’ve been keen to find out whether Ferrari were planning a track-only version of it, and what it would look like. Well, wonder no more – this is the Ferrari FXX K, and it’ll make its world debut at the Finali Mondiali event in Abu Dhabi this month.

Ferrari seems keen to distance the FXX K from the LaFerrari somewhat, with the official press release making almost no mention of the road car. Instead, it focuses on the FXX K’s position as a laboratory car, a test vehicle for a group of wealthy drivers that will splash out the as-yet-unmentioned fee to be part of the two-year programme.

The K in the car’s name refers to the KERS (kinetic energy recovery system), taken directly from Formula 1 and combined with a regular 6262cc V12 engine to produce a whopping 1035bhp and “in excess of” 664lb ft. The rise in power comes from  new camshafts and a modified valve train with mechanical rather than hydraulic tippets. The redesigned intake manifolds have been polished and the exhaust system beefed up by removing the silencers.

The electric HY-KERS system has also had a makeover, with a focus on performance rather than any nods to comfort. The familiar Ferrari manettino remains, although moved from the steering wheel to the centre console, but the four settinsg are now: Qualify, for maximum performance within a limited number of laps; Long Run to optimise performance consistency; Manual Boost for instant maximum torque delivery; and Fast Charge, for a fast recharge of the car’s battery.

Visually, the FXX K is aero city, with a twin-profile spoiler and larger, lower splitter – a design honed in GT racing. Side skirts and a high tail suck the car to the road, and the rear aero can be moved for low drag or high downforce configurations.

If you want to see the FXX K in the metal before anyone else, get down to Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi next weekend. You can read more about the event here.
