The chequered flag is fluttering on the horizon. Just two hours remain, and the battle for the lead is hotting up between AF Corse and Kessel Racing.

But, as the name suggests, the Gulf 12hrs is not just an event for the international jetset of the GT world. crankandpiston has been wandering up and down the paddock to check out the progress of the local boys, be they drivers or teams based in the UAE.

“It’s a good race, the Gulf 12hrs. We didn’t participate last year, but we decided to do so this year in preparation for the Dubai 24hrs. I haven’t been in this car for 11 months, so I thought I needed a preparatory race for Dubai, and this was really good.

“Now I’m more comfortable with the car. My stints and my times, I’m happy with them. Maybe I need to work a little on my fitness, because muscle cramps started affecting me. But just a little bit of improvement needed. I mean during this 12 hours I drove just over five. In the 24hrs I’ll drive six!

“We came here to prepare, and I have two gentlemen drivers [Vimal Mehta and Sean Patrick Breslin]. They’re great and their times are good, but we didn’t come here with anything great in mind. We thought if we could finish in the top ten that would be great and we’re actually now in the top eight.

“We’ve been consistent, didn’t have any problems, and other teams had issues. And that’s one of the main things about endurance racing. We just kept going, and kept ourselves out of trouble, and we’re very happy with our performance.
