New Nissan Le Mans challenger is front-engined and front-wheel drive.
[Not a valid template]When was the last time a race car made you say “wow, that looks a bit different”? We’ll let you decide on that one, but for us, it’s this new Nissan GT-R LM NISMO, with which the Japanese company will make an assault on this year’s World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Revealed during an advert during the USA’s Super Bowl football game, the GT-R LM NISMO is a prototype racecar like its LMP1 rivals from the likes of Toyota, Porsche and Audi, but it’s extremely unusual in that it’s front-engined and front-wheel drive, giving it very different proportions compared to its competitors. Conventional wisdom has it that where possible, race car engines should be behind the driver.
Power comes from a 3-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 mated to a kinetic energy recovery system, and the new car will make its debit at the Silverstone round of the WEC on April 12. Nissan has a particular eye on Le Mans, where Nissan has only ever managed to finish third in the past – the president of NISMO says the firm has “unfinished business there”.
We’re very intrigued to see how the new car performs. What do you think of it? Leave you comments below.
