The speed had been there no doubt, but mechanical issues in the first race and an errant spin in the second meant the top step of the podium alluded him during the weekend.
All seemed to be forgiven though after a dominant performance from the Austrian in the opening race of round three at the Dubai Autodrome. Having cemented pole position, the twice race winner was on a charge ahead of the battling field. But for a slight moment at turn one, which he admitted was slippier than he’d been expecting, the Al Nabooda Racing man simply walked away from the opposition, crossing the line nearly 6 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.
Second-placed Abdulaziz Turki AlFaisal was still all smiles on the podium. Still, rebuffing the advances of race-long rival Karim Al-Azhari in the second Al Nabooda GT3 entry meant ATF was able to hang on to the runner-up spot, and thus maintain his lead in the overall standings. Chances are tomorrow in race two he’ll be out to go one step higher though.
It had been looking good for Karim Al-Azhari. His teammate may well have waltzed into the distance, but as the first race entered its latter stages he still held a tenuous shot at second place. That all turned to nought though when circuit officials decreed the #2 machine had made a jumpstart. The multi-time UAE champ was docked 20 seconds of his overall race time, and third on the road quickly turned to seventh on paper.
