Mercedes has finally released images – and a preview video – of the AMG GT3 with which Mercedes-Benz will compete on the GT3 stages throughout 2015.
Based on the brand new AMG GT, and set to make its debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, the new AMG GT3 also foregoes the 4-litre biturbo V8 as found in the road-going model in favour of the 6.2-litre equivalent as used in the outgoing SLS AMG GT3. Though performance figures have yet to be revealed, speculation puts it around the 540bhp mark, similar to the SLS GT3.
Developed to comply with FIA GT3 race regulations, the new Mercedes features a six-speed sequential racing gearbox mounted in a transaxle configuration on the rear axle for optimum weight distribution. The double wishbone suspension is made of aluminium similar to that found in the spaceframe chassis found in the road-going AMG GT, which also makes its way across to the GT3 model. In an effort to further reduce weight (and counter the weight of the roll cage), carbon fibre panels encompass most of the model.
Key features of the wide body include the enlarged air intakes, side exhausts, a massive diffuser and an all-new rear wing.
