We recently had the pleasure of stumbling across one of the coolest old school Porsche 911s we have ever seen in the Middle East. After a good scout over the car, soaking in the race vibe, patina and general awsomeness, we took the chance to catch up with the current owner – Tim Stevens.

The car is a 1971 911S, prepared for the IMSA/GTU racing regulations around 10 years ago; it was taken fully apart, everything acid dipped and subsequently put back together with the best components from the Porsche racing experience gained by the then owner.

It has had a successful racing career in US and Canada with many wins; I apologise in advance for not knowing these in detail but it was never a selling point for me and I have no contact with the guy who owned it before me!

It was refurbished in around 2006 in Canada and has the following specification:

1)     A 2.7L Porsche engine, bored out to a 3L and rebuilt with tooling around the webs for efficient oil flow, race crank, race cams, twin spark, high compression pistons, strengthened rods, RSR oil pump and an enhanced cooling system.  It pumps out 217 hp on NFS’s dyno, a number that is hard to believe when you see it going – it is monster quick.

2)     The fueling is via two banks of throttle bodies, one per system with everything controlled by a Electromotive Tec 3R ECU, set up for pump fuel.

3)     The chassis and tub are original and it runs on a heavily uprated suspension system, using original Fuch’s wheels.  It even has a Porsche 917 braking system to stop it! No half measures here then.

4)     She weighs in at 900kgs, which is achieved by the removal of everything that was not required. Fiberglass doors, bonnet, trunk, fenders, polycarbonate windows – it even has aluminum door hinges!  The rear fin is an IROC tail with a DWR extension.

It currently has the yellow colour scheme you saw but the plan over summer is to change this to Viper green and livery it with contemporary stickers. (Ed. we say stay yellow!!)

It came to Qatar in 2007 and I have owned it for three years now and in that time, it has hardly been used; this was due to an issue with the electronics and I have replaced all this.  The setting up of the ECU that controls everything was done by NFS – I dealt with Julian and Murat and found them to be knowledgeable, capable and fun!  Murat got to grips with the Electromotive system, having never seen it, and took the car from a non-runner to a rocket ship!

Since it has been finished, I’ve done the track day at the Autodrome which was more a test than anything and the only thing that stopped proceeding was the safety feature in the ECU that retarded the timing as the heat got excessive.  The car had proved itself by then so there was no need to do anymore.

We had the pleasure of a race at Losail two weekends ago and unfortunately, we had a fuel pump issue that stopped us racing; had I gone out, I would have got third!

The car was a bit too loose for comfort at the race and it turned out to be the chassis settings; I thought it was just my incompetence overcoming the inherent stability of the car!!!  We spent a week setting up the chassis and it now has an aggressive stance.

We have just done a track night and it handles like nothing I have ever driven.  It is very light so accelerates fast, gets a good top speed and, the best bit, hardly needs to be slowed down for corners.  Once in the corner, the suspension keeps everything doing what it is supposed to be doing and will allow a really early application of power. Usually 911s are renowned for allowing this but this one, you are hardly off the gas!  The selection of metal on the track that day included 2 Gt2’s, a Gt3, 4S, 911 turbo, M5, Merc, Evo’s and the like… nothing came close.  My best time was 2 minutes 20 seconds, which, for someone new to driving cars fast, is testament to the car!  Amazing.

The car will compete in the Qatar National Road Racing Championship next season (2011/2012); we have our work cut out as the top three cars are doing 2 minute 10’s; it is a long way to go but I do feel we will make it, as I learn how to drive!!
