What is it about cutaway images? Whether it’s those fascinating cross-section books you used to get given by an uncle on your birthday, or the cover of Haynes manuals, a good cutaway drawing takes you inside the workings of awesome machines. And they don’t get much more awesome than these, depicted in some superb images culled from around the interwebz.

This 1989 Nissan R89C (above) showcases the then-new VRH35 engine, a twin-turbo, 3.5-litre V8 with up to 950bhp. It continued to power Nissan race cars until the end of the 1990s. Sadly, the R89C spent most of its life plagued by mechanical gremlins. But hey, it looks good.

The Abarth 2000 Sport Spider, in various guises, took part in sports car races aplenty during the late 60s and early 70s, but this particular incarnation is by far the looker of the family, thanks to its double headlamps, raised tail and wraparound windscreen. The cutaway shows the engineering of Enzo Osella, who would eventually go on to form his own F1 team in the 1980s.

One of the most iconic rally cars of them all, The Audi Quattro A2 seen here preceded the fire-breathing Group B WRC cars of the mid-80s. The original A1 Quattro revolutionised rallying with its four-wheel drive system and the A2 was an evolution of that, winning eight rallies in 1983 and 84 in the hands of Stig Blomqvist, Hannu Mikkola and Walter Röhrl.

The BMW 3.0 CSL – also known as the Batmobile – remains one of the most legendary cars to come out of Bavaria. Built for touring cars in 1972, it was raced by such luminaries as Chris Amon, Ronnie Peterson, Hans-Joachim Stuck and Brian Redman. They also formed the basis for the first two BMW art cars.

Do sports cars get more famous than the Gulf-liveried GT40? It remains the only American-built car to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, doing so four times and wiping the smiles of the faces at Ferrari. This particular car is chassis P-1075, which won the Greatest Race in both 1968 and 1969. It’s identifiable by the remains of its number 6 and the Gurney-Eagle cylinder head cover. But even if it was another model, it’d still be kick-ass.
