Online petition seeks to make the final two rounds of the 2013 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup a non-points paying event, securing the late Sean Edwards the championship.
[Not a valid template]The motoring world was shocked recently to learn of the tragic death of Sean Edwards, two-time winner of the Dubai 24 Hours, winner of this year’s Nürburgring 24 Hours with Black Falcon Racing, and current leader of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. The Brit had accumulated 118 points having won three times from seven races in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and finished no lower than fifth place, leaving him 18 points clear of nearest rival Nicki Thiim with just the double header in Abu Dhabi to go.
Many fans agreed it would be a cruel blow for Sean to lose the title he so richly deserved. So much so that a petition has been started to make the final two races of the 2013 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup a non-points paying event. With 20 points up for grabs for a race victory, Sean Edwards could potentially fall to third in the standings at Yas Marina on 3 November.
Some consider the petition a true sporting gesture. Others say that the circumstances, whilst certainly tragic, should not direct the outcome of the championship. Already though more than 10,000 fans have thrown their support behind the initiative, the results of which will be forwarded to Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup manager Jonas Krauss. Tempting as it is for us to take sides, we’ll leave it to your better judgement. CLICK HERE if you’d like to sign the petition, or leave your thoughts in the comments box below.
