Polestar teases first independent model – could this be a real M3 rival?

In a clever series of Instagram posts, Polestar teases some of its brand new sports saloon

It’s unusual that a car manufacturer teases its new models in a creative fashion, but Polestar, previous performance sub-brand of Volvo, has done just that and made us work for our best look yet at its first ever standalone car.

Polestar issued a series of Instagram posts of non-descript numbered images but put all the pieces together in the correct grid pattern and it makes up part of a teaser image previewing a new, muscular saloon-style car. Details may be thin on the ground, but the wide wheel-arches and shallow rear glass confirm that this first Polestar will not be wanting for visual aggression.

From within the tessellations, we can also see an aggressive rear diffuser with carbonfibre accents and slim LED tail lights that don’t seem to stray too far from Volvo’s current design language.

Mechanically, Polestar’s breaking from the Volvo brand might signal a new mentality within the walls of its Swedish HQ, but the engines and transmissions will still be based on the same core Volvo powertrains, meaning this car, whether a concept or not, could don a 2-litre four-cylinder engine with a combination of turbocharging, supercharging and electrification, as is seen in Volvo T8 Twin-engine models.

As has been previously reported, Polestar is also looking to introduce a range of pure EV halo models, although whether the model teased here is or is not, is still up for discussion.

The car is due to be seen in full in the next couple of weeks so be sure to check back as we continue to fill in the blanks on Polestar’s exciting future.
