We first stumbled across Christian Saunders and his 1984 3.2 Carrera Targa the better part of six years ago. Back then it was resplendent in factory gold paint and looked pretty much bone stock. Little did we know that as the years ticked by, Christian would fall further and further into the restoration trap. Welcome to the infectious and addictive world of creating an Outlaw Porsche.

Now, the trick with this post and the forthcoming feature  is to not give too much away. So you already know the basics. The now Gulf Blue 1984 Targa started off life in the USA and was subsequently brought to Dubai, which is when we stumbled across it. As with all restorations, things got out of hand and Christian has well and truly gone to town.

From the full 3.2 engine rebuild (re-built by Christian’s own hands) using 964 cams and a Fab Speed air intake (which promises much, but Christian suspects it will be all intake noise rather than bhp), to the Porsche 915 transmission rebuild (again, all done in the garage at home), including a WEVO gateshift…

…to uprated suspension, and this is where the cash went. It’s got hollow torsion bars, adjustable von shocks dampers, polybrzone bushings, low friction control arm mounts, monoballs all round, bump steer kit, turbo tie-rods and a triangulated strut brace up front. Enough to make a Porschephile weak at the knees.

We’ve already given too much away, so a pause is in order. We’ve just caught up with Christian who’s informed us that the trim shop has started its work and the engine is due for its trial fit next week. There’s not long to go, and then all will be revealed.

As home builds go, this one is particularly special. Not only is it the first full nut-and-bolt build that Christian has ventured into, it’s one that he has got well and truly stuck into himself. Yes, it’s a big budget build, but there is nothing more impressive than knowing that a VAST amount of the work has been done by one man. With some help from his two dogs.
