This is a new direction for us here at crankandpiston…For the first time we are dipping our toes into the main stream and bringing you some news from the land of the manufacturer rather than the sub culture. Is it the right direction?So here goes…Porsche as a company has become revered for it’s ability to continually master and hone the car that made its name since it’s inception in the very early 60’s…However as they entered the end stretch of the last Millennium they put into production the very cool prototype that had been shown earlier to the public at Frankfurt – The Boxster! The 986 went onto to be a best in class car for Porsche and opened up a new market they hadn’t been hitting since the very cool VW collaboration; the 914 ( Just to jog Luke’s mind again!!). Together with the 996 the 911 and the Boxster brought in bridalled success for Porsche enabling them to tread territory and grow their brand, company and bank balance in ways they could never have dreamed of not be ten years earlier. However – We all know what has gone on recently – – rather gladly it hasn’t slowed them down in the slightest.So this brings me to the new derivative of the Boxster – The Porsche Boxster Spyder. The newest member of the Boxster family stands out from the other versions of Porsche’s mid-engined roadster. Its low-slung, lightweight soft top “when closed“ extends far to the rear to protect the driver and passenger from bright sunshine, wind and weather. The Boxster Spyder features a 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine with Direct Fuel Injection upfront of the rear axle. Maximum output is 320 horsepower (hp), 10 hp more than the Boxster S. The combination of 10 more hp and 176 pounds less weight than the award-winning Boxster S, plus an all-new sport suspension that lowers the Boxster Spyder 20 mm, a lower center of gravity, a standard limited slip differential (WAHOOOO!!!!), and exclusive wheels provides the kind of driving dynamics that back up the unique look. Aluminum door skins and lightweight interior door panels from the 911 GT3 RS contribute to the weight reduction.

When equipped with Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission and the Sports Chrono Package, the new Spyder, using Launch Control, accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Top track speed is 166 mph“ with the roof open.
Fundamentally, the entire Boxster family is the successor to the legendary 550 Spyder and RS 60 of the Fifties and Sixties (if you havent seen one of these – head for Google or log on to Amazon and order “Excellence was expected”), all sharing the same mid-engine roadster concept.
In 2004 and 2008 Porsche produced limited editions of the Boxster bearing the additional name Spyder, honoring the 550 and RS 60. In contrast, the new Boxster Spyder is a regular, but specially developed and upgraded production model as compared with the Boxster and Boxster S.
So it all sounds very good to me and if there is a version specced up for the GCC Markets (no A/C don’t forget) I will be hitting the front of the queue to drive it.

…both for Porsche and the site. Applying a sub-culture view point to a mainstream production car is pretty unique without diluting the appeal of your other content. When manufacturers are effectively peddling “ready modified” products such as the Spyder, giving the perspective of someone who could feasibly take a stock Boxster and produce a similar, more track focussed one-off, is an excellent niche to be able to fill. How do the likes of the Spyder and the M3 GTS measure up against a more individual modify / build approach, and what do they mean for a modifier or production racer culture? Do they move things forward, erode the skills and knowledge out there, or are they irrelevant (if tasty) marketing fluff?
The only shame is that Porsche’s press photography doesn’t match up to the quality of work normally seen on C+P!
