The German company has an illustrious history in the rally world, although not lately. Back in the 60s 912s were regular features on the European rally scene and the 911 has been rallied throught its history, most in the 80s when the 959 was twice a winner in the Paris-Dakar (below) and the legendary Walter Röhrl plied his trade to spectacular effect.

Now Porsche is putting its works sports car drivers Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas in 911 GT3 rally cars to compete in national rallies in Germany and France. It seems that despite glories in the American Le Mans Series, Le Mans Classic, Nürburgring 24 Hours and Sebring 12 Hour races, the pair have a passion for racing away from circuits.

Timo (above) will be behind the wheel of a 911 GT3 Cup in the Germany Rally Championship, racing for Rally Team 75 – the team directed by his father Rüdiger. Timo has considerable rally experience with his co-driver Marco Glasen, having competed for the last four years in a Golf 3 Kitcar and winning two events.

Romain has actually rallied with a Porsche in France for the past three years, having run a 996 GT3 RS (top) during that time and notched up six overall wins. For 2011 he and Guilhem Zazurca will field a 997 GT3 RS in the GT Plus category of the French Rally Championship.

Don’t expect to see the pair in a car together though. “Like most professional race drivers we’re both not that good as co-drivers, we always want to have everything under our own control,” Timo said.

“If it ever happened, it would have to be at a historic rally where top times don’t really count,” Romain added.
