Abu Dhabi might not be the most obvious place to test wet weather tyres, but that didn’t stop Pirelli from using the Yas Marina Circuit to give its new Formula 1 rubber a good workout.

The Italian tyre manufacturer is replacing Bridgestone as the sole supplier for 2011 and hired out the circuit this week, bringing test driver Pedro de la Rosa, plus a 2009 Toyota F1 car, to gather data and make sure its return is a success.

Mindful of the desert conditions, the circuit had a fleet of water trucks laying down puddles for Pedro, although when we were there it rained anyway.

Yas is actually an ideal venue for testing all variants of tyres, a Pirelli spokesman told us, as it’s floodlit, which enables them to splash the track at night when the sun won’t instantly dry it out again. The warm conditions help recreate conditions similar to those found in Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.

The new F1 season kicks off in Bahrain in March, when we’ll see if Pirelli’s hard work pays off.
