While Al Thani and Grogor ultimately put the newboys in their place on home turf, SR3 points leader Tarek Elgammal was having less success against the debutants Ramez Azzam and Zaamin Jaffer. Despite new teammate Amro Al Hammad proving his worth with consistent laptimes, their spare (right-hand drive) SR3 tub was proving difficult to tame. Throttle issues and limited running before the opening race meant both Elgammal and Al Hammad struggled to keep up with the leaders. A couple of spins on-track plus wayward handling meant eighth and fifth places was as good as it going to get.
Azzam and Jaffer meanwhile were too busy taking advantage of their race one pole position to notice, despite coming under terrific pressure from series regular Mohammed Jawa and Raed Abu Zenadah in the early stages. A series of devastating laps around the Yas Marina south circuit meant the Azzam had opened up a near-4s margin back to Zenadah come the pit stops, only for Jawa to leapfrog them both on pitroad.
A slow running Zenadah would soon fall back from the chase, but a terrific run by Jaffer (now in the #5 hot seat) meant that the lead to Jawa was eroded quickly. The local boy would set a string of personal best laptimes in the closing stages, and the resultant eight-second deficit proved too much for Jawa to overhaul. SR3 victory belonged to Azzam and Jaffer.

Just behind in third, a storming drive by Tom Jordan and Alex Kapadia in the #6 had almost gone unnoticed, the pair first overcoming a poor grid slot (a difficult qualifying session saw them line up third from last) and then a late-race drive-through penalty for a pitstop time infringement to take the final step of the SR3 podium.
With race two polesitters Azzam and Jaffer baulked by an appalling start that dropped the #5 car to 11th, the #6 Jordan/Kapadia machine in clean air soon opened up a 5s lead to the pursing SR3 pack, a gap that had extended to over ten seconds come the chequered flag. From the back, Azzam and Jaffer stormed back through the field in a brilliantly determined drive to take third place, and bittersweet irony meant that Jawa once again fell short of victory in second place.
In the SR8 class, technical gremlins had struck Grogor and Al Thani badly in second qualifying, to the extent that they failed to set a time at all. Having managed to avoid an enormous scrap in the SR3 midfield (which saw Jawa taken right to the pitwall by Al Hammad and Zenadah as they went three-wide down the main straight), SR8 rivals Well and Littlejohn, and Sykes and Kemp were already 5s ahead. A dejected Kronfli by this stage had been forced to abandon his SR8 machine on-track, the engine refusing to spring back into life.
