As is the way with motorspot by and large, it’s very easy for an observer to judge a competitor’s performance, but very difficult to try it firsthand. And drifting an RC car is ridiculously hard! The controls alone – which boast a myriad of buttons, rotary dials and even touchscreens – are enough to boggle the mind, and that’s before we begin trying to get the balance of speed right. A large rotary dial on the side controls the power sent to the RC car’s rear wheels, which spin faster than those of the front so that the car can go sideways: too little power and you’ll lose the momentum and grip at the front; too much and you’ll just spin out. Then try aiming for a drift gate no more than 4” tall. Exactly!

Qualifying is just step two of this RC Drift Battle. There’s still the tournament itself to come as well as inauguration of the event’s Drift King. There’s a long way to go, but everyone has his game face on.
Oops. Sorry! RC Drifting is not a game, is it?
