Launched at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1980, the 5 Turbo was a repost to Lancia’s rallying success at the time with the all conquering mid-engined Stratos. Renault’s then VP of Production, Jean Terramorsi made the call to the skilled designers at Bertone and asked them to get scribing a new design based off the Renault 5 supermini. Mr Gandini himself even got his hands dirty on the rear end… something that even to this day has a “don’t mess” look about it.  Many cars of that era that looked mental then, seemed to have softened up over time – the 500e for example – but not this!

At the time the standard Renault 5 ran a FWD set-up, however to tackle the Stratos, mid was the only way to go. Initially featuring a 1397 cc turbocharged engine sat just behind the driver, which in standard form developed a healthy 158 hp. Remembering of course that this was a dinky, lightweight, hot hatch!

Now imagine if you will that you have one of these little gems in your collection. It’s a little ropey around the edges and the engine has shot a rod through the engine case. There sat in the corner is rather feisty looking Mitsubishi engine, crying out to be put to good use.  So what do you do?  Create uproar by tearing into your Renault 5 Turbo and give it a heart transplant… that’s what you do.

Step up Omar Hijazi from Amman, Jordan… He is that guy!  And thank fully he didn’t hold back when people started questioning what he was doing. A path blazer and a guy that will be more than happy with the now 272bhp the little pocket rocket is ploughing through the rear wheels. Yes it might have compromised the dynamics with the extra weight, but to be honest we don’t care.  It looks awesome, sounds killer and more than likely goes like stink.
