When I first landed in Dubai many moons ago, one of the first cars I got my grubby mits on – apart from my delightful Yaris hire car (which I duly crashed on day 2) – was a Ford Edge. I’d seen a lot of them out and about on the roads and thought they were a mildly funky alternative to the more humdrum vehicles out there.

I came away reasonably impressed by the car, even half considering buying one for myself before I switched tack and signed up for an orange LR2 instead. But now there’s a new Edge in town – this time with added Sport.

Whilst the metalwork of the latest Edge remains unchanged from the original car, the facelift that affects the bumpers front and rear gives the Edge a whole new look. The grille is knocking on Audi-sized and the headlights are sharply styled and look pretty badass at night.

This Sport edition ditches the chintzy chrome that’s bestowed on the rest of the Edge family, in it’s place it something called ‘Tuxedo Black’ – which is, well… black. The wedding attire colour also makes its way onto the wheels.

Ah yes, the wheels. These bad boys really make the Ford Edge Sport a real contender in the C&P stakes. Whilst the regular Edge rolls around on some natty 18″ alloys, the Sport rocks a set of 22s.

Yes, really – 22-inch wheels on a family wagon. Whilst they look pretty badass when the Sport’s parked up, they look even better on the move. Though we’re hate to think what a set of 265/40 R22 tyres are going to cost when it comes to replace them.

We had the Edge Sport at C&P towers for a few days and have been enjoying its various amenities both inside and out. It’s got Ford’s all-singing and dancing MyFordTouch inside which mates quite happily with your phone/iPod/usb/memory to give you full access to your choice of tunes on the move.

It takes a while to get used to all the bells and whistles, but once you get your head around it – and get used to the slight delay from the big touch screen in the middle of the centre stack – it works very well indeed.

Verdict on the burgers? Not bad, though the meat could do with a bit of extra seasoning and the salad (fresh from the fridge) made the whole thing a little bit cold for my liking. Still, it’s head and shoulders above the dross we usually get from McDonalds in Media City.

To prove the Edge Sport is not all show and no go, Ford has fitted its potent 3.7-litre V6 under the stubby bonnet. With 305bhp and 280lb ft of torque, it certainly gets the Edge motoring. The six-speed ‘box even has diddy paddles behind the steering wheel spokes to give more control over the ratios, though to be honest I just let it do its thing in Drive.

Thanks to the chunky wheels, the steering of the Edge Sport is a lot meatier than the standard car – though it’s still very much from the American school of car building, rather than some chiselled European road machine.

And whilst the Edge does come in all-wheel drive flavour, it never going to be a weekend warrior – a short blat across some packed sand is fine, but you’ll soon come a cropper if you try anything more complicated.

As we rocked back towards the office with Jay-Z’s Empire State of Mind pumping through the rather potent stereo I came to the conclusion that the Edge certainly isn’t a sports car, but then again it’s not pretending to be one. As a family wagon with style and plenty of poke for you to bumble around town it’s pretty darn good.
